You say “jazz” and people think of New Orleans, smoke in their eyes, and trumpets in back alleys.
Then they find out all it takes is a short climb up to Miasino, stepping into a stone courtyard, and there’s the jazz—right in front of you, a drink in your hand, and the moon peeking over the rooftops.
The Miasino Classic Jazz Festival isn’t one of those events with giant stages, endless queues, and “I was there” wristband selfies.
Here you don’t even need GPS: just follow the sound of a double bass chuckling and a piano flirting with a trumpet.
You’ll end up in the courtyard of Villa Nigra—by day, all historic elegance; by night, an open-air lounge.
Three nights, a thousand stories
Every August, for three nights, Miasino fills with musicians from all over the world.
And the beauty is, you never hear them just “play their set”: on stage, they’re having fun, improvising, diving into solos that may never happen the same way again.
The audience? A curious alchemy.
There’s the gentleman in the Panama hat who knows everything about Coltrane, the couple who just found out jazz doesn’t bite, and the tourist who thought they were just taking a lakeside walk—only to end up with a gin and tonic and an encore of the encore.
More than music
The festival is an excuse.
To watch shadows dancing on 17th-century façades.
To talk to complete strangers who, by the third song, aren’t strangers anymore.
To breathe air that smells of lake water, old wood, and good things.
And if you arrive a bit early, you can wander through Miasino’s alleys, take in the view from the Giardino dei Semplici, or explore the villages around Lake Orta.
